SCAM THROUGH QR (QUICK RESPONSE) CODE

SCAM THROUGH QR (QUICK RESPONSE) CODE

A QR code (Quick Response Code) consists of several black squares and dots which represent certain digital information. When a smart device scans this code, it translates that information into something that can be easily understood by the device. Fraudsters often contact customers under various pretext and trick them into scanning QR codes using payment apps. This allows the fraudsters to withdraw money from customer’s account.

Modus operandi of QR code scam:

  • Fraudster poses as buyer for an item put up for sale by an individual on some online buying-selling website.
  • Fraudster initiates a conversation with the individual and shares a QR code to pay an advance or token amount.
  • If the individual falls for this bait, then the fraudster creates a QR code with a higher amount and shares it with the individual (now a victim) again claiming to share the remaining amount.
  • The fraudster asks the victim to select “Scan QR code” option again on the app and select QR code from the photo gallery.
  • After scanning the QR code, the victim is urged to proceed with the payment.
  • As soon as the UPI PIN is entered, money is deducted from the bank account of the victim.
  • When confronted on WhatsApp, the fraudster pleads innocence and requests for a re-scan of the code to reverse the payment.
  • As soon as the victim scans the QR again, another amount is debited from the victim`s account.

Security measures:

  • Be cautious while scanning any QR code using any payment application.
  • Keep your UPI PIN secret. Your UPI PIN is just like your ATM PIN – Do not share it with anyone.
  • Enter your UPI PIN only in your UPI app while paying through trusted application.
  • You do not need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. Be careful while authorizing UPI collect requests and validate the credentials of the other party before entering your UPI PIN.
  • In case of any suspicious activity/ frauds/ fraudulent transactions through mobile banking, internet banking, debit card, UPI etc., inform your bank immediately. You may raise FIR with local police authority for further legal action.
  • Only download trusted UPI applications. Unknown/ harmful applications can access personal information including your payment details you type on your screen.
  • Set pin/pattern/password/biometric lock to your UPI application.
