SCAM THROUGH SEARCH ENGINES

If an individual uses a search engine for obtaining contact details of bank, financial institutions, etc., he/she may end up contacting unknown / unverified contact numbers displayed on the search engine. These contact details could be camouflaged by fraudsters to attract their victims towards them. Once the individual calls them, the imposters to convince to give their card details for verification. Assuming this contact to be genuine, people compromise all their secure details & thus fall prey to frauds.

Modus operandi of Search Engines scam:

  • It all starts with a simple search of customer care number by an individual on search engine like Google / Yahoo / Bing, etc.
  • The search result may include simple websites that were created just to be easily indexed and listed by the search engines.
  • The contact number listed by some of these websites could bear contact number of a scammer impersonating a customer care executive.
  • If the individual requests for any service, this scammer attempts to assure resolution of the request by seeking PIN / OTP from the individual.
  • Once the individual shares this PIN / OTP, the scammer carries out fraudulent transactions leading the individual to become a victim.

Security measures:

  • Avoid searching for customer care contact details on search engine.
  • If there is a need to contact the bank via call, kindly call phone numbers listed on the official website of the bank.
